Where to Buy

There are many sources for native plants but you need to do your research to be sure the plants you purchase are actually natives, not cultivars and that they have not been pre-treated with neonicotinoids or other insecticides.

The native plants sold at CFC’s spring and fall sales are free of neonicotinoids and other insecticides!

If you live in or near the Barrington area, check Citizens for Conservation’s home page in early April to shop for native plants (trees, shrubs, forbs and grasses) and again in August to shop for native trees and shrubs.

Chicago Living Corridors maintains a list of organizations holding native plant sales, nurseries that sell native plants and mail order companies that offer native plants.

Please don't buy or use any insecticides, particularly systemic products. They all kill massive numbers of beneficial native insects that feed nestlings. Where neonicotinoids are used, bird populations are dropping. Parent birds can't find enough soft-bodied larvae to feed their babies. Insecticides are killing the larvae first. Learn to love the holes in the leaves, proof that you are supporting pollinators and birds in your yard. To read more about neonicotinoids, go to the Pollinator Protection page.
